What I've learned from coaching hitters, and how it can help you...
In my 18 years of coaching hitters, I've learned several key distinctions about the swing, how to teach it, how to analyze it, and how to most effectively help players make positive changes, often without them even knowing it!
Let me show you how to take the complex and make it simple for you as a hitter or as a coach. The DVD,
40 Hitting Drills to Help You Find Your Best Swing, is a collection of my very best drills that we use every day with our hitters. The drills work because they have to. In this league, you produce or you go home - that's the harsh reality of it.
The drills are great to use with your entire team if you are a coach, or for you to use on your own if you are a hitter. We believe that ball players improve the most when they are working on their own - without a coach or parent correcting every little detail. The last thing we want is a hitter to think about body parts like their feet, hands, arms, elbows, etc.
We give them just a few simple ideas to keep in mind: we want their head tracking the ball and we want them to store up their energy and release it as efficiently as possible right back up the middle. They can execute all of these drills and instantly see if they are getting those results. They will figure out how to make the adjustments to get the results, and while doing so, they are correcting any swing flaws without having to even think about it! That's powerful, no matter what level the player is at whether a beginning youth player or an elite college athlete. Let the drills do the coaching.
No Philosophy, just Precision…
There's a lot of hitting philosophy out there. Precision is what gets the job done, though. Let's take a look at the battle between a pitcher and a hitter to illustrate this point. A pitcher is trying to load up his energy and deliver it to a precise target. The hitter is trying to do the same thing - load up his energy and release it right back up the middle. The pitcher's job is to disrupt the hitters flow of energy with either pitch placement or by changing speeds. Take a curve ball - the curve ball reaches its apex and most hitters will follow the pitch up and their flow of energy is up instead of straight back toward the pitcher. Have you ever seen a hitter miss underneath a curve ball? Hardly, they miss above it and the pitcher has accomplished his goal of disrupting the hitters energy. Philosophy says stay back to hit the curve ball. Precision says work beneath the plane of the breaking ball.
All of the drills included on the DVD have a precise purpose to address one or more aspects of a successful swing. Here is what is covered in the drills:
- warm up drills that help the player load up their energy and release it right back up the middle with efficiency
- tee drills that build a foundation for transferring all of the body's energy most effectively into the ball
- tee drills that put hitters in uncomfortable situations where they have to figure out how to make the adjustments to produce the results we want. I want my hitters to be uncomfortable in practice so that during a game when the pressure is on, they're relaxed and confident that they can deal with anything the pitcher can deliver.
- drills to free up the lower body. So many hitters, especially young ones, are locked up in their lower body and lose a lot of power because of it.
- drills to keep the upper body relaxed and loose
- simple drills to end bat wrap
- drills to keep the bat on plane with with pitch throughout the hitting zone, conquering a severe upper cut or downward stroke
- drills that keep the player aligned to maximize their transfer of energy right back up the middle
- short toss drills with variations that help hitters make the adjustment between a fastball and any off-speed pitch
We designed these drills to help hitters improve on their own without us having to coach or critique every single swing. That's not laziness on our part, it's simply the most effective way to allow hitters to improve. We believe that every hitter has their own unique style and that no one swing is the perfect swing. That's why it's
40 Hitting Drills to Help You Find YOUR Best Swing and not
40 Hitting Drills to Help You Find THE Best Swing. Each player is different and the drills work no matter what their particular style is.
What we've found, and what you'll find as well, is that a hitter will pick out of few drills that become their favorite drills to practice on their own. Whether they know exactly what aspect of their swing is being improved by their favorite drills is irrelevant. What's relevant to them is that they gain confidence that they are improving their swing - and they get this without having to be told about swing flaws that might be hurting them. Let the drills do the coaching.
